Alcohol vs. Blended Backgrounds

Hi Crafters, today I have a fun video for you that compares alcohol inked backgrounds to dye inked backgrounds. I've received many questions about alcohol inks since they have made a come back this year and I wanted to show off the difference! I used some of the dies – Everglade Collage and Far Away Forest Collage Dies from Simon Says Stamp's DIEcember release to give them a nice frame.

The main difference between alcohol and dye ink pads are that alcohol inks are a liquid and work on glossy paper while dye inks are in a felt or foam pad and are used on normal cardstock. Alcohol inks are a great price – usually $3.99/each while dye ink pads vary from $4.99-$8.99/colour.

The above example shows just how shiny alcohol inks can be! I added alcohol blending solution when I was finished inking my background so get those fun splotches. Adding a Metallic Mixative (gold or silver) really adds a lot of shine but use it sparingly as a little goes a long way.

I tried to use similar colours of dye inks to blend this background. I used Catherine Pooler inks to get a nice ombre purple-pink colour. It has a very matte look to it. To add a little excitement, I used Versamark ink over top of a stencil to give it a subtle pattern but the camera didn't pick it up well.

This is another dye inked background. This time I inked the background and then I placed stencils overtop and put on a second coat to make a fun snowflake pattern with the Simon Says Stamp Frozen Fractals.

My last card is another alcohol inked background.  I used a swiping technique to get a seamless blend unlike the pink card. If you would like more examples, check out the video as I show several at the end of the video.

Here is an old one! See! I was alcohol inking before it was cool 😛
